Laser hair removal treatment has become dramatically more effective in recent years. In the past, treatment was limited to people with lighter-toned skin and darker hair. Now, with a variety of advanced lasers at our disposal, we are able to safely treat people with virtually all skin types and hair colors. At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we have several different types of lasers specifically designed to treat people with both lighter and darker skin tones, as well as a wide range of hair colors.
How does laser hair removal work?
Lasers emit a specialized pulsed light, which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and then transmitted down the hair shaft to the root. The heat from the laser damages the hair follicle and inhibits future hair growth.
Which areas can be treated by laser hair removal?
Lasers can safely remove unwanted hair on almost any part of the body. The most common treatment areas for women include the legs, armpits, face, and bikini line. Men typically treat the neck, upper arms, shoulders, and back. However, all areas that grow hair can be treated.
What should I expect during laser hair removal treatment?
Laser hair removal treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in our offices. Topical numbing cream is applied. Most patients tolerate the procedure easily, describing a light prickling or snapping sensation during treatment. The area should be shaved or the hair cut short prior to treatment. You can resume your normal activities immediately following treatment. For the best results, Dr. Levine recommends that you do not wax or pluck hairs for three weeks prior to treatment.
Is laser hair removal safe?
When performed by a physician or other licensed professional with expertise in laser technology, laser hair removal is safe and effective. At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we have a wide range of advanced lasers that can treat the full spectrum of skin and hair types. Before your procedure, Dr. Levine will evaluate your skin and hair type and select the best laser for your needs. She will also thoroughly discuss your goals and expectations, including possible risks and the best way to prepare for your treatment.
Are the results of laser hair removal permanent?
The results vary, depending on the person and the areas treated. In many cases, hair removal will be permanent. In other instances, hair may be significantly reduced, with any remaining hair becoming finer, lighter, and sparser in treated areas. Hormonal shifts in your body may require occasional touch-up treatments.
How many treatments will I need?
Laser hair removal is performed over a series of treatments so that hair can be targeted at different stages of the growth cycle. The number of treatments needed also varies with the area treated. For most, Dr. Levine recommends a series of 6 to 8 treatments, spaced approximately one month apart. Any re-growth can be addressed with periodic touch-up treatments.
